Space of Repose
Smith College 2002, Arch. Studio 281
Collaboration with Soomin Han
Collaborative project to design and build a "space of repose" within the
Smith College campus using 16 sheets of cardboard. The project called
for a conscious site choice and a careful contruction plan.
We set our site on the center of Quad lawn as a mean to provide a quiet
place of self-reflection in a lively undergraduate environment. The four
blocks were placed precisely on the intersection of the main lawn to interrupt
the progress. This was a blatant attempt to rechannel the path while inviting
them into the enclosure. Once inside, no seating is provided because the
space is still part of a progression but you can still find repose for
a few minutes at a time. The undulating tops sets a cohesive unit of the
four separate walls while mitigating the rigid ness of the straightedge.
Similar technique is repeated in the light slits.
