Cob Wall
Yestermorrow Design Build School 2004 Intern
Site Design and Foundation: in collaboration with Zach Lamb
Construction: in collaboration with Intro. to Cob Design class
Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, & hay and is used as a natural building method. The consistency of the mixture depends on the site climate. Once the mixture is made, it is then balled into a is smaller size and stacked on like brick. Collaboration is essential in the whole process and construction is often done in barefoot, and bare hands. Once it's dried, coats of plaster cover the cob to protect from the weather. The versatility of the material makes it easy to produce organic structures.
40 ft. long garden wall was designed to create an outdoor seating area on Yestermorrow campus. The design followed the natural curve of the ground while mimicking the mountain skyline. Foundation of dry stones were set on 12in. deep trench.
